The Problems of the Church

The church of Agioi Anargiroi has suffered damages from the two major earthquakes in 1981 and 1999.

Those damages were first reported in 2005 but up until today no restoration work has taken place. As a result, those damages get worse as time goes by.

That was confirmed by a second technical report – autopsy in November 2012 which concludes that:

«The overall safety of the Church, as a construction, becomes questionable due to damages, taking also into consideration the age and diversity of the structure, the absence of static strength calculation and the structural interference suffered in the past. It is understood that its static and operational adequacy has been affected and there is a risk of structural elements collapse, both in case of an imminent future earthquake, as well as during its daily operation. In addition, the overall image of the Church is not consistent with the spirit of maintaining the religious and cultural heritage.»

Finally in February 2013, after an autopsy by the Planning Division of the City of Athens, a Hazardous Building Report was produced. This report characterises the building as dangerous, asks for some necessary work to be done and says that in order to remove the hazard report, a full restoration study must be drawn and all the necessary restoration work must be completed.

It has therefore become imperative to take action to restore the church.

Below you can see some photos that show the extent and severity of the damage.
